Located just 5 km off the coast of Umkomaas, KwaZulu-Natal, Aliwal Shoal is ranked among the world’s top ten dive sites and for good reason. This fossilised sandstone reef, once an ancient sand dune, is now a vibrant underwater world teeming with marine life, dramatic rock formations, and thrilling shark encounters. From the famous Ragged-tooth Sharks of winter to the baited shark dives that draw Blacktips, Tiger Sharks, and even Hammerheads, Aliwal Shoal promises unforgettable dives in warm Indian Ocean waters.
Wildlife & Marine Encounters
Sharks: Ragged-tooth (Jun–Nov), Oceanic Blacktips (year-round), Tiger & Bull Sharks (Nov–May), Hammerheads (Oct–Mar), Whale Sharks in summer.
Rays: Manta, Ribbon-tail, Spotted Eagle Rays (often at Manta Point).
Other marine life: Turtles, dolphins, seasonal humpback whales, colourful reef fish, and fascinating macro life.
Baited Shark Dives
Experience the thrill of being eye-to-eye with ocean predators – without a cage. On a baited dive, a scent corridor draws sharks close, giving divers the chance to hover at 5–8 m and watch these incredible animals glide past. Visibility is often excellent, and the encounters are nothing short of exhilarating.
Reef & Wreck Diving
The shoal’s main ridge, the Crown, lies at around 12.5 m, surrounded by slopes averaging 19–20 m. Swim-throughs, gullies, and overhangs shelter schools of fish and shy sharks. Technical divers can explore nearby wrecks such as the Produce and Nebo, both rich in marine growth and history.
