Boulders Beach has become a popular tourist destination due to the unique opportunity it offers to see and interact with the penguins. The beach itself is characterized by large granite boulders that provide sheltered coves and calm waters, creating an ideal environment for the penguins. The African penguins, also known as jackass penguins due to their distinctive braying call, are a protected species.
