Knysna, Garden Route

Thought to have been developed in 1796 when George Rex landed in the Cape, Knysna was originally used as a port for sheltering ships, although this ceased into 1954. Since then, Knysna has become a popular tourist destination located between George and Plettenberg Bay. Most famously, Knysna is known for its warm-water estuary that passes between two large headlands known as the Knysna Heads. The Heads boast a breath-taking lookout point, which gives visitors the optimal vantage point from which to appreciate the open ocean, as well as the chance to enjoy a meal at restaurants that offer stunning views and good, wholesome food.

The town of Knysna is an absolute delight for travellers on a South African safari. Set on the northern shore of the estuary, it’s surrounded by the popular Outeniqua Mountains and the Knysna Forest. The Forest is a fascinating experience in itself, featuring an impressive selection of very old trees and an interesting array of animals, including the famous Knysna Elephants. Travellers can even explore the Forest at night, which reveals an entirely hidden variety of creatures who come out after dark. When it comes to providing activities and entertainment for visitors, you won’t be left wanting when visiting Knysna and its surrounds.

Knysna Beaches

The nearest beach to Knysna is called Brenton-on-Sea and it is a very popular surf spot for adventurous surfers. The Millwood gold mine features a picnic area, which is richly popular with nature walks and swimming areas. Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and a snake-park also make it a must for nature and animal lovers alike.

Other activities that can be experienced during your visit to Knysna on a South Africa safari include hiking, horse riding, canoeing, riding, yachting, paragliding, fishing and scuba diving. For those in search of rest and relaxation, the region also boasts world-class spa and one of the country’s most famous golf courses.

Knsyna is one of those lucky areas that can be visited throughout the year, making it a reliable destination to visit during your South African safari.
