Set out on an extraordinary adventure that will enthrall any safari enthusiast – an unparalleled experience of witnessing the Great Migration in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Celebrated as one of the most breathtaking and wildlife-rich spectacles on Earth, this natural wonder guarantees to transform your Tanzania holiday into an unforgettable safari adventure of a lifetime.

The Great Migration on safari in Serengeti National Park

Meaning “the place where the land runs on forever” in the local Maasai language, the Serengeti National Park is at the heart of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, which also includes the Ngorongoro Crater. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the area is a must-visit inclusion on your safari to Tanzania.

The Serengeti is home to the Great Migration, the annual movement of more than two million wildebeest and zebras. The animals are on the move between the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya to the Serengeti in Tanzania in search of lush, fresh green grass. The Great Migration is a year-round process with the animals moving in a huge circle within the ecosystem. Planning your vacation to Tanzania to be a witness to the sensory explosion of sights, sounds, and smells is made easier with our guide to this unequaled wildlife spectacle.

December to March
The zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, and a handful of other plains game are spread across the southern part of the Serengeti. Food is plentiful for the new arrivals to the animal kingdom while a whole host of predators are also lurking about.

April to August
The long trek towards the Masai Mara in Kenya is in full swing, with some of the herds following the traditional Western Corridor routing, which is where the fabled river crossings occur at the Grumeti River.

August to November
The herds are generally located in the Masai Mara and the northern reaches of the Serengeti. It’s time for another dangerous crossing, this time of the Mara River, before the long return journey.
