Experience Botswana’s diverse landscapes on a 12-day safari that moves through some of the country’s most remarkable wildlife regions. This journey combines river systems, vast salt pans, and wildlife-rich reserves, creating an itinerary that showcases the natural contrasts of northern Botswana.

From the wildlife corridors of the Boteti River and the open plains of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park to the safari gateway town of Maun, the journey gradually unfolds toward the renowned wilderness of Moremi Game Reserve and the remote grasslands of Kazuma Forest Reserve.

Game drives, river excursions, and time spent in pristine natural areas provide opportunities to observe Botswana’s wildlife in varied ecosystems. Along the way, you may encounter large herds of zebra and elephant, predators such as lion and leopard, and a remarkable diversity of birdlife.

This safari offers a well-rounded introduction to Botswana’s wilderness, combining iconic landscapes with memorable wildlife encounters.

Highlights of the Tour

Boteti River, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

Flowing along the western boundary of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, the Boteti River plays an important role in the region’s wildlife movements. During the dry winter months, thousands of zebra migrate toward the river, creating one of Africa’s lesser-known wildlife spectacles. The contrast between the shimmering salt pans and the life-giving river makes this area a fascinating stop on any Botswana safari.

Maun

Situated on the banks of the Thamalakane River, Maun is widely regarded as the gateway to the Okavango Delta and northern Botswana’s safari regions. Once a small frontier town, it has grown into the country’s tourism hub, where travellers begin their journeys into the surrounding wilderness. Nearby attractions include scenic boat cruises along the Thamalakane River and easy access to the wildlife areas of Moremi Game Reserve and the Okavango Delta.

Moremi Game Reserve

Located within the eastern part of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve is one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife areas. The reserve protects an extraordinary mix of ecosystems, including floodplains, woodlands, lagoons, and open savannah. This diversity supports a wide range of wildlife, from large herds of buffalo and elephant to predators such as lion, leopard, and cheetah, as well as rare species like sitatunga and wild dog.

Kazuma Forest Reserve

The remote Kazuma Forest Reserve lies within Botswana’s Chobe region and forms part of an important wildlife corridor between Botswana and Zimbabwe. The landscape is characterised by wide grasslands, seasonal pans, and mopane woodland, creating ideal habitat for plains game including wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, and sable antelope. Large elephant herds also move through the reserve, making it a rewarding destination for wildlife viewing away from busier areas.

Accommodation

We make use of typical mid-range African standard lodge accommodation. Accommodation is situated either in national parks, on the banks of a river, or in other places of interest. The accommodation will be a mix of lodges, chalets and tented camps with en-suite bathrooms.

Pre-Tour Information

JENMAN Safaris has extensive knowledge and experience in most African Countries. Throughout the many years we have learnt about a few “Do’s and Dont’s” while travelling in and around Africa. We have therefore developed this list for you to read at your leisure. All tips are not always relevant to all the areas that you travel to – depending on your tour.

Due to a lack of transparent and credible regulation relating to ethically acceptable practices where captive wildlife is concerned, Jenman African Safaris has taken the decision not to support any activities that include physical contact with captive wildlife. We urge you to consider the ethical implications of taking part in any such activity that may be offered at your lodge.

Arriving for Safari

Get some rest on the first day of your arrival – you may need some time to adjust to a different time zone. Rather arrive a day early to rest and start off your tour refreshed and ready for adventure!

Currency

When you need to exchange your currency, avoid any exchanges on the street or in other areas that may seem suspect. Always note that even when people approach you with an, e.g., 50% premium exchange rate offer, this exchange is considered part of the black market and is illegal! Hotels, Camps and Lodges can change money, but sometimes the rate is slightly lower. We recommend that you visit an accredited Bureau de Change.

Credit Cards

Credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in most areas as well as at bigger hotels and lodges.

Hospitals and Pharmacies

The larger towns in Southern Africa have pharmacies and hospitals, but you should always make sure you have enough of your medicine in case the pharmacies/hospitals don’t stock them.

Telephone

In most areas you can call internationally – however please note that some of the smaller areas may not have these facilities and international phone calls are costly. Also, built up areas and towns do have cell-phone reception!

Passports, Documents and Valuables

Please make sure that you keep your passport, documents and any other valuables with you at all times! We recommend that a copy of these documents should be made and kept in another safe place in case something happens to the originals. Never leave valuables alone and remember you are on safari, so expensive and valuable jewellery is not necessary.

Safety

Every area (any where in the world) can be unsafe at times. Please take common precautions at all times and never walk alone, especially at night or in run-down areas!

Packing

Remember to always check the amount of luggage you are allowed to take on the plane as well as on the Safari Vehicle – they may differ. We recommend that a soft bag is used instead of a hard suitcase as it’s preferable on safari. Most air flights allow for 20kgs and our scheduled safaris are limited to 15kgs per person. Don’t forget to put luggage tags on your suitcases (for the airplane and the safari).

Luggage and Medication

Please be advised that you should put any medication that you need (e.g.: diabetes medication) into your hand luggage, even with the strict regulations, airlines will allow that as long as you have a letter from your doctor.

What to wear

You are on safari and out in the bush so make sure that you are comfortably dressed with comfortable shoes. Always have a mix of clothing including; summer clothes, light raincoat, warm top and a hat.

Punctuality

Please be on time when you meet your vehicles for the game drives. If you run late you may delay the rest of the trip or miss something wonderful!

Climate

Always remember that the African Sun may look gentle but it is strong and can be harsh. Too much sun can lead to headaches, dehydration, nausea and dizziness. Rather look after yourself by using sun screen and a hat versus trying to get a nice African Tan.

Drinking Water

In built-up areas the water is safe to drink (mostly in South Africa) however, some areas it is not safe to drink the tap water at all! So we rather recommend that you drink bottled water at all times to prevent any illness. You may use the tap water to rinse your mouth when brushing your teeth! Ice is generally fine to consume, but sometimes it is better to be cautious. We advise you to rather drink bottled water at all times in Africa!

Food and drink

Africa is famous for its fruit and fresh vegetables – which can be enjoyed all around Africa. Fruit and Vegetables should be peeled before eating. Drinks (including spirits) and cigarettes can be bought in most areas but are normally quite expensive. On our Safaris we do provide most/all meals which are prepared by our guide or at a lodge.

Anti-malaria medication

A lot of areas in Africa are affected by Malaria – we strongly recommend that you take your anti-malaria medication. Take your medication exactly as its prescribed and directed, don’t skip any medication! At the end of your safari, if at any time you develop influenza symptoms please consult your doctor immediately.

Power and Electricity

Most places (hotels, lodges) have electricity. But we always recommend that you should take a flash light with you on safari. Always remember if you plug something in (e.g.: One of your appliances) there may be a different voltage! The usual voltage is 220-240 AC. If you appliance does not match this voltage you need to bring a converter with as some lodges may not have a converter for you to use…

Photos

There will be many amazing photo’s that you will want to capture along the way on your safari. But, you need to make sure you don’t take any photos of any people without their permission. Also, never take pictures of anyone/anything in the military, police force, armed forces, government, presidents or airports.

Animals

The animals in the bush and the ones that you may see on safari are wild and should not be approached! Animals may roam freely around so be observant and cautious when walking from place to place.

Tipping

Tipping is not included in meals unless there is a service charge included in the bill – then you don’t need to tip. Normal tipping is 10% of the bill for drinks and food. Tipping for guides and drivers are always appreciated and range from US$5 and US$10 per day.

Add-On Safari

1 night at Ilala Lodge, Victoria Falls (includes a tour of Victoria Falls & Zambezi River Cruise) from
USD 519.00 per person sharing

On arrival at Maun International Airport, you will be met and transferred by helicopter to Hideaways Mankwe Tented Retreat, where you will stay for the next three nights.

Located in a private concession bordering Moremi Game Reserve, the retreat is surrounded by mopane woodland and offers a peaceful setting close to key wildlife areas. Elevated walkways connect the main lodge areas, which include lounge spaces, pools, and an open deck overlooking a waterhole that regularly attracts wildlife.

During your stay, you will enjoy guided game drives into Moremi and the surrounding concession areas. This region is known for strong predator activity, with lions, leopards, hyenas, and wild dogs often sighted alongside elephants, giraffes, and large herds of buffalo.

Between activities, relax at the lodge or enjoy quiet moments overlooking the waterhole before gathering around the fire in the evening.

After breakfast, you will travel by road to Mogotlho Safari Lodge, situated along the banks of the Khwai River between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park.

Raised tented suites offer uninterrupted views across the river, where hippos are frequently heard and elephants regularly cross nearby. The lodge provides a comfortable base from which to explore the wildlife-rich Khwai region.

Guided game drives in the Khwai concession reveal a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, lion prides, leopards, and numerous antelope species. The region is also one of Botswana’s most reliable areas for sightings of African wild dogs.

Meals are often enjoyed outdoors, and evenings are spent relaxing around the fire while listening to the sounds of the surrounding wilderness.

Following breakfast, you will transfer to Khwai Airstrip and fly into the heart of the Okavango Delta, where you will spend the next three nights at Delta Camp.

Located on the southwestern edge of Chief’s Island, the camp overlooks seasonal floodplains and palm islands that form part of one of Africa’s most unique ecosystems.

During your stay, activities include mokoro excursions and guided bush walks, allowing you to explore the delta at a slower pace. Without the noise of vehicles, these experiences offer an intimate way to discover the region’s birdlife, smaller wildlife, and intricate delta landscapes.

Your guide will tailor activities depending on water levels and wildlife movements to ensure the best possible experience in the delta.

After breakfast, you will fly to Kasane, where you will enjoy a Chobe River cruise before continuing to Hideaways Camp Kuzuma for your final two nights.

The camp is located within a private concession in the Kazuma Forest Reserve, a remote wilderness area between Chobe National Park and Hwange National Park. The lodge overlooks a central waterhole that regularly attracts elephants, giraffes, roan antelope, and other plains game.

Game drives explore this less-visited region, where large herds of elephants and buffalo move between Botswana and Zimbabwe. The private concession allows for flexible safari activities and excellent wildlife viewing away from busy areas.

Relax on the lodge deck overlooking the waterhole or enjoy sundowners as wildlife gathers at dusk.

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Kasane International Airport in time for your onward journey.
