On arrival at OR Tambo International Airport, please proceed to the Avis Car Hire depot to collect your hired car. From Johannesburg you will head east towards Mpumalanga. A landscape characterized by mountains, panoramic passes, valleys, rivers, waterfalls and forests. You spend the night in the small forestry town of Graskop. The rest of the afternoon is yours to spend at leisure.
This morning you will start with your scenic drive along the Panorama Route, arguably one of the most beautiful destinations in South Africa. The most spectacular stretch is the Blyde River Canyon, which is the 3rd largest canyon in the world, and filled with lush vegetation and wildlife. The following day you will have an opportunity to visit the world famous Kruger National Park.
Today you cross the border into the mountainous Kingdom of Swaziland, led by King Mswati III, and one of the 3 monarchies in Africa. You will explore the traditions and discover the culture of which the Swazis are so proud. En route you will have the opportunity to visit the Ngwena Glass Factory.
Today you will re-enter South Africa via Northern Kwazulu-Natal. Continue to Ghost Mountain Inn, situated at the foot of the legendary Mkuze Ghost Mountain. You will have the opportunity to take the following optional game activities: an open-vehicle game drive in the Mkhuze Game Reserve, guided walks, cultural excursions and boat cruises.
Today you will drive to iSimangaliso Wetland Park, which was listed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site. This afternoon you will be able to partake in an optional boat cruise on the St Lucia estuary, getting up close to the hippos and crocodiles that inhabit the lake.
Today you will make your way to the coastal city of Durban. Experience some of the many diverse attractions and visit enchanting locations within easy reach, or simply relax on the golden sandy beaches to soak up the African sun.
Fly to Gqeberha (the city formerly known as Port Elizabeth) and begin the next leg of your Garden Route self-drive. Pick up your rental vehicle and continue to your hotel.
After breakfast, continue your journey along the Garden route, where you can stop and relax at a stunning beach before making your way towards the Tsitsikamma Forest. Explore the coastal bush and rocky shoreline, and if you are more adventurous, plunge off the world’s highest bungee jump at the Bloukrans River.
Drive along South Africa’s southern coastline, known as the Garden Route, and you will experience an incredibly scenic drive to Knysna. You may also like to take a trip to the nearby Monkeyland, where you can take a monkey safari in the forest to learn about these fascinating creatures, ranging from the Gibbons of Asia to the Lemurs of Madagascar. Next door is Birds of Eden, a free flight bird sanctuary, complete with a canopy walk, mysterious ruin and a walk behind a waterfall. The main attraction is the 220 species of birds that inhabit the aviary. The next day is spent at your leisure.
After breakfast, drive to Oudtshroon, the ostrich capital of the world. Explore the historical Klein Karoo at your own pace and partake in some activities, such as a visit to the show farm to learn about the history and use of these unique birds, as well as their life cycle and how they are farmed. Another option is touring the famous Cango Caves – the mysterious limestone formations in the stunning depths of a subterranean wonderland.
This morning after breakfast, drive to Cape Town International Airport to drop off your hire car in time for your departure flight. We hope to welcome you on one of our African adventures again soon.
