Known for offering wonderful diving opportunities, Sodwana Bay is the only tropical dive site in South Africa and one of the few places in the world where dive sites are reached by weaving a path through breaking waves. Divers can enjoy warm water, deserted beaches, exciting coral reefs, a great diversity of seascapes and marine life. Also popular here is nature walking and turtle spotting. Located within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in KwaZulu-Natal, this Marine Protected Area offers pristine coral reefs, abundant marine biodiversity, and excellent diving conditions year-round.
Marine Life & Encounters
Sodwana’s reefs are home to over 1,200 fish species, from colourful reef dwellers to large pelagics. Divers can expect to see reef sharks, dolphins, manta rays, and several turtle species, including Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Green turtles, as well as occasional sightings of Olive Ridley turtles. In summer, Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles nest on nearby beaches, while winter brings the migrating humpback whales. Macro enthusiasts can search for rare finds like the African Pygmy Seahorse, ornate ghost pipefish, and frogfish.

Wildlife & Marine Encounters

While diving is the main draw, Sodwana Bay offers plenty for land-based explorers. Visitors can take a guided turtle nesting tour (Nov–Mar), go birdwatching at nearby Lake Sibaya, or enjoy a cultural visit to local Zulu villages. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park itself offers game drives, estuary cruises, and breathtaking panoramic viewpoints.
