Just off the coast of Jamestown, in the clear waters of Young’s Valley, lies the Atlantic Rose, one of Saint Helena Island’s newest and most colourful shipwrecks. Originally a small yacht brought to the island by a German chef to transport supplies, the vessel was later bought by two local brothers who converted it into a fishing boat for tuna trips to the Bonaparte and Cardno seamounts.
When bad weather struck, the Atlantic Rose broke its moorings and was driven onto the rocks, suffering irreparable hull damage. In April 2006, the island authorities decided to give the vessel a second life, it was deliberately sunk to form part of an artificial reef that now supports a thriving marine ecosystem.
A Shallow-Water Dive Favourite
Resting in just 8 metres of water, the wreck is perfect for beginners, snorkellers, and underwater photographers. Its small frame lies intact on a sandy seabed, surrounded by corals and soft sponges. Schools of butterflyfish, trumpetfish, parrotfish, and juvenile groupers weave through the railings, while moray eels and rays are often spotted gliding past.
Visibility is excellent, often over 25 metres, and the gentle conditions make this one of the most relaxing and rewarding dives on the island.
From Fishing Boat to Reef Sanctuary
The Atlantic Rose represents a new chapter in Saint Helena Island’s maritime heritage. Unlike the century-old wrecks of the SS Papanui or SS Bedgelert, this modern vessel was intentionally sunk to enhance marine biodiversity and support sustainable dive tourism. It now stands as a symbol of the island’s ongoing commitment to conservation and community-driven adventure.
