The SS Papanui shipwreck is one of Saint Helena Island’s most famous sites for both scuba divers and snorkellers. Now located in James Bay off Jamestown, it was built in 1898 as a passenger and cargo steamer.
The SS Papanui was en route from London to Australia when fire broke out in her coal bunkers in September 1911. Despite desperate efforts to control the blaze, the flames spread rapidly, forcing Captain Chalkley to beach the vessel close to shore. All 324 passengers and crew were rescued safely before the ship was engulfed and sank.
From Flames to Reef
For several days the wreck smouldered offshore, its smoke visible from the cliffs above Jamestown. Over time, the steel hull settled upright in shallow water, becoming a thriving artificial reef. Corals, sponges, and shoals of tropical fish now cover her 137-metre frame, creating one of the most accessible and colourful underwater sites in the South Atlantic.
Diving and Snorkelling the SS Papanui Shipwreck
The wreck lies in 6 to 12 metres of clear water, with the sternpost breaking the surface and the full outline visible from Ladder Hill on a bright day. Visibility often reaches 25 metres, and conditions are calm, making it ideal for beginners and underwater photographers. Divers can glide through open holds and along the boilers where butterflyfish, trumpetfish, and parrotfish gather, while snorkellers can admire the reef life from above.
A Living Piece of History
More than a century after her loss, the SS Papanui remains a reminder of Saint Helena Island’s maritime heritage and resilience. It is also a favourite training and leisure dive for local operators, who continue to protect the site as part of the island’s marine conservation area.
