SS Bedgelert Shipwreck

Lying off the coast near Long Ledge, the SS Bedgelert Shipwreck is one of Saint Helena Island’s quieter underwater secrets. Once a British cargo steamer brought to the island to assist in the salvage of the SS Papanui, she never returned home. When the salvage work was abandoned, the SS Bedgelert was left moored to the SS Papanui’s sternpost. During a violent storm she broke free, damaged other vessels in the harbour, and was later scuttled in 2001 to form an artificial reef.

The wreck now rests in 18 metres of clear water near Long Ledge, an easy boat ride from Jamestown. It is ideal for intermediate divers and confident snorkellers. Although time and tide have scattered her remains, the boilers, prop shaft and engine block are still recognisable, surrounded by hull plates draped in coral.

  • Depth: 16 – 18 m
  • Visibility: 15 – 20 m
  • Currents: Mild, occasionally moderate
  • Access: By boat from Jamestown Harbour

Marine Life

The SS Bedgelert Shipwreck has become a thriving reef ecosystem. Schools of butterflyfish, trumpetfish, parrotfish, and juvenile reef fish shelter among the wreckage, while moray eels hide in the boilers and groupers patrol the sandy patches. The machinery is now coated with hard corals, sponges, and sea fans, a reminder that even industrial relics can evolve into living reefs.

A Piece of Maritime Heritage

Though less famous than the SS Papanui or RFA Darkdale, the SS Bedgelert tells an important part of Saint Helena Island’s maritime story. Her transformation from working vessel to reef highlights the island’s long relationship with the sea, one shaped by trade, weather, and resilience.
