Baobab Alley
This is perhaps the most popular and sought after photographic opportunity in Madagascar. Rows of tall baobabs shoot up into the sky from the flat dusty earth. These towering columns with a cluster of leaves and branches right at the top, form a striking landscape especially around dusk and dawn when the sky turns hues of orange and red and the baobabs are silhouetted against a breathtaking backdrop. Tsingy Bemaraha
Tsingy formations are a phenomenon found in a few different spots in Madagascar. These spiky limestone karts are formed by millennia of erosion and create an alien-like landscape of grey spikes and rivulets that wouldn’t look out of place in a sci-fi movie. At Tsingy Bemaraha there is a hanging bridge between two Tsingy cliffs and a picture of yourself or your partner posing in the middle of this bridge is sure to be the envy of your friends back home. Tsingy Rouge
Tsingy Rouge, isn’t exactly traditional Tsingy (hard grey rock that has been shaped by millennia of wind and water), Tsingy Rouge is red clay that suffered rapid erosion due to the negative effects of deforestation. While the origin isn’t ideal, the result of pretty rock formations in graduating shades of pink and red allows for some beautiful photographs.
Local Lemurs
These funky primates with long fluffy tails and comically small hands are endemic to Madagascar and there are over 100 species to be found. While they can be found in zoos around the world, the opportunity to photograph them in their natural habitat will earn you serious bragging rights. Take the opportunity to look for various lemurs in various reserves, Andasibe-Mantadia is a good place to start.
Piscine Naturelle
In Isalo National Park there is a rock pool so perfect it’s called the Piscine Naturelle which means “Natural Swimming Pool”. Surrounded by lush green ferns, steep moss-covered walls, and boasting a beautiful aquamarine colour – it’s a magical place to take a refreshing dip during a day of hiking and to capture an image of sublime beauty while feeling inner bliss. Nosy Be
Madagascar’s “Perfume Island” draws visitors with a passion for tropical paradises, sipping cocktails on the beach and exploring the wonders of the marine world by snorkel or SCUBA. Of course, the palm trees, tropical blooms, white sands and blue waters are already the typical postcard image but there’s a special spot on the island where at low-tide an exposed sandbar extends a path to another smaller island, Nosy Iranja.
